According to a recent report by AAA, 39.3 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more away from home this Memorial Day weekend–a 1M increase from last year, creating the highest Memorial Day travel volume since 2005.
The data crunchers at priceline.com found that 78% of Americans who travel for the long weekend are going out of state and 70% of travel was booked during April/May—so the time to book is now! More often than not, the best deals can be found on mobile. With the cost of gas at its highest since 2015, priceline.com pulled together affordable destinations for Memorial Day travelers based on price crunching data provided by SVP of Hotels, Mark Koehler.
“For travelers looking to stay local and save this holiday, consider shoulder season cities such as Miami and Houston to lock in four-star accommodations at the best prices. You’ll also find a steep decline in prices for big cities like San Francisco, as the city’s conference calendar is light on holidays. And in New York City, natives flock to the Hamptons and other coastal towns nearby leaving the city wide open for tourists with unbeatable deals,” said Mark.
Miami, FL. Head to the Sunshine State and take advantage of the variety of 4- and 5-star hotels in Miami Beach and South Beach offering up to 40% off rooms during MDW. With many arts and cultural happenings during this time, like Miami Museum Month and the Miami Taste of Brickell Food & Wine Festival, they’ll be no shortage of things to do.
San Francisco, CA. The City by the Bay clears out due to the minimal number of conferences or business trips happening around MDW, so travelers have a multitude of 4-star hotels under $150 to choose from in popular neighborhoods like Union Square and Fisherman’s Wharf.
Houston, TX. If you can handle the heat, the Lonestar State offers up deals on a surplus of 4-star hotels for under $125. If you’re looking for luxury, save nearly $300 off when booking a room at the newly opened Marriott Marquis Houston where you can float along the stunning Texas-shaped lazy river on the roof.
New York, NY. Resident New Yorkers notoriously abandon the Big Apple during the first long weekend of the summer for getaways to Montauk and the Hamptons, leaving the busy streets free for visitors. Travelers can take a bite out of the Big Apple without breaking the bank during MDW with a range of 4-star hotels offering 35-45% discounts in trending area like Time Square, Chelsea, SoHo, and Central Park South.
