Priceline.com’s 6 Post-Tour de France Biking Weekends

All trips were shopped for the first weekend following the conclusion of the Tour de France (July 29-31)

Cape Cod Rail Trail.  This trail follows an old railroad line and winds 22 miles through the towns of Dennis, Harwich, Brewster, Orleans, Eastham and Wellfleet, covering a sizeable section of central and eastern Cape Cod.  The terrain is flat and paved, lending itself to any kind of bicycle and skill level.  This is a family-friendly biking trail and provides lots of options to drop off for a swim, food, shopping or overnight lodging.

Rate range for a 3-star hotel on Cape Cod: $155-$449

Sample Cape Cod vacation package, July 29-31, $717/person, includes roundtrip airfare from New York and 2 nights at the 3-star Holiday Inn Hyannis

The Eastern Trail.  Part of Maine’s East Coast Greenway, the Eastern Trail is 65 miles long and runs from Kittery to Casco Bay in South Portland, offering gorgeous coastal scenery and a real taste of Maine.  No need to ride the whole trail – just pick out a section that is most appealing. The Eastern Trail also offers on-road and off-road routes, so bring or choose the right bike for the terrain.

Rate range for a 3-star hotel in Kittery: $130-$409

Rate range for a 3-star hotel in South Portland: $209-$449

Sample vacation package, July 29-31, $591/person, includes roundtrip airfare from New York and 2 nights at the 3-star Hilton Garden Inn Auburn Riverwatch

The Luckenbach Loop.  Texas Hill Country is a mix of cultures, wildflowers, history and music.  A leisurely ride from Fredericksburg, with its German flavor, to Johnson City could run 30 to 50 miles or more, depending on the side trips. For side trips, detour to tiny Luckenbach of Waylon Jennings fame, where there’s live music most afternoons and evenings.  Outside Johnson City, stop in at the Lyndon B. Johnson ranch, or “Texas White House” as it was known and tour the sprawling ranch house.

Rate range for a 3-star hotel in Fredericksburg: $90-$229

Sample vacation package, July 28-31, $612/person, including roundtrip airfare from New York and 3 nights at the 4-star Omni Austin Hotel at Southpark

George S. Mickelson Trail.  The 109-mile G.S. Mickelson Trail winds south through South Dakota from Deadwood to Edgemont.  The trail is packed with Wild West history with more than a 100 railroad bridges and, of course, the beautiful panorama of the Black Hills.  The crushed limestone and gravel roadways make this a fat-tire, mountain bike trail, and there are hills that up the difficulty level beyond beginner.  There are several towns along the trail for those who want to break up the trek into multiple days.

Rate range for a 3-star hotel in Deadwood: $101-$389

Sample vacation package, July 28-31, $1,517/person, including roundtrip airfare from New York to Rapid City and 3 nights at the 2.5-star Hampton Inn Deadwood at Tin Lizzie Gaming Resort

Moab Canyon Pathway, Utah.  The pathway connects Moab to Arches National Park, Dead Horse Point State Park, and Canyonlands National Park.  Riders can go for up to 100 miles through rock formations and backdrops used for multiple motion pictures.  Route options are available for road and mountain bikers.  The middle of the pathway can get steep but, otherwise, it’s mostly flat and picturesque.

Rate range for a 3-star hotel in Moab: $160-$509

Sample vacation package, July 28-31, $1,210/person, including roundtrip airfare from New York to Grand Junction and 3 nights at the 3-star La Quinta Inn and Suites Moab

Napa Valley.  Probably the ultimate in biking indulgence.  Get in a riding workout through wine country, stop in a spa for the evening.  Napa has thoughtfully marked out the bike-only trails through the region, possibly so that bike-riding winery visitors can cycle between stops without encountering any cars.

Rate range for a 3-star hotel in Napa: $89-$599

Sample vacation package, July 28-31, $1,260/person, including roundtrip airfare from New York to San Francisco and 3 nights at the 3.5 star McClelland Priest B&B Inn
