Las Vegas is the top destination for travelers celebrating Memorial Day 2014, according to priceline.com’s annual survey of the Top 50 destinations for the holiday that traditionally kicks off the summer travel season. In second place on this year’s list is San Diego. This is the 12th year that priceline.com has published its Memorial Day travel list based on travel bookings made through priceline.com for the upcoming holiday weekend.
Last year, an unusually cold spring in many parts of the country prompted travelers to spend Memorial Day in major cities. This year, beach destinations large and small are back in force as travelers look to warm up and lose those memories of the polar vortex. Once again, Memorial Day travel was pretty much confined to the U.S. with London being the only destination chosen outside North America. This could be due to the fact that most Memorial Day travelers save their longer trips for later in the summer.
In many destinations, average daily room rates (ADRs) for hotels are down compared to last year, creating some solid values for Memorial Day getaways. Some cities with especially good hotel bargains are:
- Atlantic City, ADR $166 (-7% compared to last Memorial Day)
- Toronto, ADR $109 (-19%)
- St Catharines/Niagara Falls, ADR $120 (-8%)
- London, ADR $175 (-9%)
- St. Petersburg FL, ADR $123 (-4%)
- Orlando, ADR $94 (-4%)
- Washington, DC, ADR $139 (-4%)
